Paphos in Cyprus, 21-20 BC., Augustus, Æ16, RPC 3906.

Paphos(?) mint Cyprus, Augustus, issued by A. Plautius, proconsul, 21-20 BC.,
Hemiobol / Æ16 (15-16 mm / 2,40 g),
Obv.: IMP - [CAESAR] - DIVI F , bare head of Augustus r.
Rev.: A PLAVT[IVS PROCOS] , Conical cult xoanon of Aphrodite of Paphos within central distyle tower, semicircular forecourt below.
RPC I, 578, 3906 ; BMC 2-3 ; SNG Cop. 69 ; Tziambazis 5 ; Nicolaou, Paphos, 526 .

This coin shows the temple at Paphos on the reverse, a continuation of the very rare post-Actium, Ptolemaic issue with this temple. Tiberius issued similar reverse hemiobols in the name of his son Drusus. The conical stone which stood at the center of this temple, was found by archaeologists a short distance from the temple. It has been confirmed as a meteorite and is now on display in a local museum.
