Nach der Eroberung des größten Teils von Schlesien wurden von König Friedrich II. 1742 in Niederschlesien und 1743 auch in Oberschlesien preußische Verwaltungsstrukturen eingeführt. Dazu gehörte die Einrichtung zweier Kriegs- und Domänenkammern in Breslau und Glogau sowie deren Gliederung in Kreise und die Einsetzung von Landräten. Die Ernennung der Landräte in den oberschlesischen Kreisen erfolgte auf Vorschlag des preußischen Ministers für Schlesien, Ludwig Wilhelm von Münchow, dem Friedrich II. im Februar 1743 zustimmte. Aus der Standesherrschaft Beuthen, einem der schlesischen Teilfürstentümer, wurde der Kreis Beuthen gebildet.
In der Volksabstimmung in Oberschlesien am 20. März 1921 votierten im Landkreis Beuthen 59,1 % der Wähler für den Verbleib bei Deutschland und 40,9 % für eine Abtretung an Polen. Durch die Beschlüsse der Pariser Botschafterkonferenz wurde der Landkreis geteilt. Der Ostteil des Kreises fiel an Polen, wo aus ihm der Powiat Świętochlowice in der Autonomen Wojewodschaft Schlesien gebildet wurde.

Birkenhain, Kreis Tarnowitz, Oberschlesien, seit 1945: Brzeziny Śląskie, eine Ortschaft in der Woiwodschaft Schlesien: Brzeziny Śląskie (first Brzezina, German Birkenhain). Around 1750, there was only a forester's lodge in Brzeziny, and it wasn't until the first half of the 19th century that several peasants settled here. Around 1820, there were 13 buildings forming the Brzezina colony, belonging to the village of Kamień. The development of Brzezina (later Brzeziny) is associated with the commencement of the mining of lead and zinc ores in this area around the middle of the 19th century. In 1855 the "Samuelsglück" ore mine was founded here, in which Georg von Giesches Erben (heirs of Georg von Giesche) soon bought the majority of shares, and in 1858 the "Bleischarley" lead and zinc mine of Count Gwidon Henckel von Donnersmarck, also until 1868 it was taken over by Giesche's heirs. Next to both mines, the second Górka colony (Biały Szarlej) was established. Along with the development of ore mines, Brzezina and Górka colonies developed, new inhabitants came. At the end of the 19th century, brick buildings dominated in Brzeziny, all houses were built of bricks, which gave the village the appearance of the city. Inhabitants were mostly new people who came here to work in the mine. By March 29, 1882, a new, independent commune was created, with the German name Birkenhain (German: Birke - birch, Hain – small wood), still called Brzezina in Polish. It had 1050 inhabitants, and Kazimierz Szwedt became its first village administrator. For 15 years, the commune was administratively subordinate to Kamienie. Birkenhain commune (Polish Brzeziny) gained full independence and administrative separation in 1897.
After the division of Upper Silesia in June 1922, Brzeziny was in the Polish Świętochłowice poviat.
