The Franco-Prussian War (1870–71) brought ruin to the Second Empire. The re-carved coin was executed on the occasion of the shameful defeat and capture of Napoleon III in Sedan in September 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war. Following the defeat of Napoleon III at Sedan, many satirical medals were issued or coins changed to ridicule the French Emperor. Held responsible for 80,000 prisoners, Napoleon III is often shown dressed with a German uniform or helmet.
