Minted for the October 28, 1845 national ceremonies commemorating the tragic and sudden death of Ferdinand Philippe, Royal Prince and Duke of Orléans on July 13, 1842, who was the eldest son of King Louis Philippe I of France and heir apparent to the French throne. On 13 July 1842, Prince Ferdinand was tragically killed after he was crushed by team of skittish horses as he was leaving his carriage. His sudden tragic death at the age of 32 years old greatly shook the French nation as he was an extremely popular and well loved Prince, who was an intelligent and liberal leader, a patron of the arts, and an able military commander who had only recently won a major military campaign against the Ottoman Turks. This medal was not produced until 1845, since it was minted as part of the national ceremonies commemorating the Prince´s death which were held in Paris on October 28, 1845. The major event of ceremony was the unveiling of the large bronze equestrian statue of Prince Ferdinand as the Duke of Orleans by the famed Italian sculptor Baron Carlo Marochetti. The reverse side of the medal shows a depiction of Marochetti´s statue of Prince Ferdinand. Baron Carlo Marochetti (1805-1867) was a famed Italian sculptor and was responsible for some of Europe´s best‑known monuments of that era.
