Baia Mare (Hungarian: Nagybánya; German: Frauenbach; Latin: Rivulus Dominarum; Yiddish: באניע, Banya) is a municipality in northwestern Romania and the capital of Maramureş County. The city is situated about 600 kilometres from Bucharest, the capital of Romania, 70 kilometres from the border with Hungary and 50 kilometres from the border with Ukraine.
According to the 2002 census, the population of Baia Mare is 137,921.
