Crypt and original tomb of the martyr Saint Sebastian, Rome, Via Appia Antica, catacombs of San Sebastiano.
The restored crypt and original tomb of the martyr Saint Sebastian, Rome, Via Appia Antica, catacombs of San Sebastiano.

Saint Sebastian (died c. 288) was an early Christian saint and martyr. According to Christian belief, he was killed during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. He is commonly depicted in art and literature tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows. Despite this being the most common artistic depiction of Sebastian, he was, according to legend, rescued and healed by Irene of Rome. Shortly afterwards he went to Diocletian to warn him about his sins, and as a result was clubbed to death. His body thrown into the common sewer (Cloaca Maxima). A pious lady, called Lucina, admonished by the martyr in a vision, got it privately removed, and buried it in the catacombs at the entrance of the cemetery of Calixtus, where now stands the Basilica of St. Sebastian. He is venerated in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

The Catacombs of San Sebastiano are a hypogeum cemetery in Rome (Italy), rising along Via Appia Antica, in the Ardeatino Quarter. They are one of the very few Christian burial places that have always been accessible. One of the smallest Christian cemeteries, this has always been one of the most accessible catacombs and is thus one of the least preserved (of the four original floors, the first is almost completely gone).
The restored crypt of S. Sebastiano todays shows a table altar on the site of the ancient one (some remains of the original's base still survive) and a bust of Saint Sebastian attributed to Bernini.

The votive inscription of the time of Pope Innocent I. (402-417) at the wall, cut on a pierced marble screen erected to protect the original tomb of the martyr S. Sebastian, reads:
TEMPORIBVS · SANCTI / INNOCENTI · EPISCOPI / PROCLINVS · ET · VRSVS PRAESBB / TITVLI · BYZANTI / SANCTO · MARTYRI / SEBASTIANO · EX · VOTO · FECERVNT ("At the time of holy / Bishops Innocent / Proclinus and Ursus, priest / on Titulus Byzantis / (did this votive decoration) in honor of the holy martyr / Sebastian")
