The sole figure is depicted in the mode of a hero, or demigod, lacking attributes that could identify him with any known deity. This has led scholars to identify him with a local mythological hero named OINOΠIΩN, a son of Dionysos who founded and ruled over the city of Chios and taught the locals how to cultivate vines and produce wine. During the Roman period we have evidence that a cult existed at Chios in honour of this hero. Pausanias noted (late 2nd century AD) that a magnificent building in the city of Chios was held to be the grave of Oinopion and its walls were inscribed with deeds attributed to this hero.
