Commodus, Rome mint, 180 AD.,
Denarius (17-18 mm / 2.65 g),
Obv.: M COMMODVS - ANTONINVS AVG , laureate head of Commodus right.
Rev.: TR P V IMP VIIII - COS II P P , trophy of captured arms, with male and female captives below.
RIC III, 367, 9a ; BMC 9 ; C. 791 .
Recalling his earlier issues (as Caesar), when Commodus and his father celebrated their victorious campaigns against the Germans and the Sarmatians. This issue may be viewed as pure propaganda, since he abandoned the battlefield to return to Rome, rather than continuing to fight the Marcomanni.
