The colony of Caesaraugusta (Colonia Inmunis Caesar Augusta) was established by Augustus about 24-19 BC with veterans of the Legio IV Macedonia, Legio VI Victrix and Legio VII Gemina of the Kantabrian wars next to the Ebro river at the site of the Iberian oppidum of Salduba.
