The Sovereign Council of Asturias and León was a sovereign and independent political institution proclaimed in Gijon on August 24, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War.
The victories of the troops of General Franco in the north taking Santander led the republican authorities in Asturias to declare independent of the Spanish Republic to the Interprovincial Council of Asturias and Leon with intention to join her "view of favorable events that occur in the course of the war."
The isolation of the northern front, 200 kilometers in a straight line from the nearest Republican positions, with the subsequent shortage of military and food supplies, led local authorities assume functions that were the responsibility of the former government of the Republic, as the military command or supply of coinage.
