Western Asia Minor, Sartrapal coinage, Achaemenid satraps in Ionia, ca. 350-334 BC., Æ12, Klein, KM 365.
Western Asia Minor, Sartrapal coinage, Achaemenid satraps in Ionia, late era of Artaxerxes II til the defeat of Darius III, ca. 350-334 BC.,
Æ12 (ø 11-12 mm / 1,59 g), bronze, axes about medal alignment ↑↑ (ca. 20°),
Obv.: Persian hero-king right, in running-kneeling stance, holding left bow and right transverse spear.
Rev.: a square within a square, central extension at outer square below: a line projecting out from (Dynastic symbol ?, sketch of a Persian fire altar ?).
BMC Troas pg. 324, 11 ; SNG von Aulock 7810 (Memnon of Rhodes) ; Klein, K.M. 51, 365 ; Plant 2738 ; SNG Cop. - ; SNG Tübingen 2754 .

From at least the early 1900s, this type has been traditionally assigned to Memnon of Rhodes, but there is no evidence to substantiate such a specific attribution. The style of the obverse links it to the "map" issues of the Achaemenid satraps in Ionia, which have been dated to circa 350-333 BC.
