Elst is a town in the municipality of Overbetuwe in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Elst is situated in the Betuwe, between the cities of Nijmegen and Arnhem. Elst has 21,130 inhabitants.
Elst is famous for its Roman temples, which are situated under the Saint Werenfried church. Elst was a separate municipality until 2001, when it became a part of Overbetuwe.
Het oudste document waarin de naam van Elst wordt vermeld stamt uit 726. Hierin wordt de plaats Heliste genoemd. Algemeen wordt ervan uitgegaan dat deze naam van het Germaanse *alhistja komt wat "heidens heiligdom" betekende of een afleiding is van *alha, wat als "woonplaats" kan worden omschreven. De naam Heliste raakte verbasterd tot onder meer Elistha en uiteindelijk Elst.
