The "à consommer"-token types were used for gaming at slot machines in France ca. 1902-1937. There is a wide variety of these tokens with diameters between 16 and 23 mm.
The first slot machines appeared around 1890. In 1902, the laws were changed, the law no longer allows the distribution of cash earnings. In order to continue their lucrative business, manufacturers of slot machines then skirted the law by distributing gains: they distributed them to the winners of candy, cigarettes or consume tokens.
The token could not repeat more than two to three times the game. The implementation itself should not exceed 10 cents. Another requirement for customers: the chips were won to be consumed in establishing the profits of the slot machine. These machines were installed in various public places, such as bars or fairgrounds.
In France slot machines were finally banned by decree in August 1937.
