Philippi in Macedonia, 14-37 AD., Tiberius, Semis, RPC 1657.
Uncertain (Philippi?) in Macedonia, Tiberius, 14-37 AD.,
Æ Semis (18-19 mm / 4,57 g),
Obv.: TI AVG , bare head of Tiberius right.
Rev.: two veiled priests driving yoke of oxen right, plowing pomerium.
RPC I 1657 ; BMC 89 ; SNG Cop. 283 ; McClean 7661 .
RPC: No real picture emerges as to the nature and mint(s) of this coinage. It is not clear if it was colonial or provincial and if it was struck in different mints; its area of diffusion was mainly Macedonia, Troas, Bithynia and Mysia were it probably passed for a semis.
The pomerium or pomoerium (Latin, from post + moerium > murum, "wall"), was the sacred boundary of the city. In legal terms, Rome existed only within the pomerium; everything beyond it was simply land belonging to Rome.
