History of mining at Ramsbeck (Bestwig community, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany):
Although the mining industry is much older than from 1518, estimated about 700 years old, that is, from the late Middle Ages. For the year 1518, the documentary evidence for the mining of lead and zinc can be provided in Ramsbeck.
In 1719 the Ramsbecker Ausbeutetaler in silver with portrait of the Elector of Cologne Clemens August and mining motif arises.
1851-1854 The mining concessions go to the "Rheinisch-Westfälische Bergwerksverein" over. Europe is now in the pre-industrial phase. The Marquis de Sassenay, Director General of the Society for Mining and zinc production to Stolberg wanted, save by buying the Ramsbecker pits the ore base of his company and expand the space Ramsbecker one of the largest industrial centers of Europe. Indeed Ramsbeck experienced due to the influx of many miners from the Wittgensteiner Land, the Siegerland, from Saxony and the resin has a considerable boost: new villages and roads emerged 25 new stamp mills for ore processing were built, and in Ostwig began with the construction of Friedrich William Hut.
The number of employees increased from 450 to more than 2,000 people. Although to cover the cost monthly 180,000 dollars were needed, was in 1854 a net profit of 1,170,000 francs was achieved. A short time later, however, confirmed the initial doubts of the Board, because the deposit did not prove nearly as rich as accepted. The Marquis de Sassenay disappeared, leaving the company Ramsbecker a debt of 3.5 million thalers. Through the collapse the dream of the world metropolis Ramsbeck smashed.
Various upgrades of DM since 1968 and the simultaneous decline of the pound sterling had a decisive that the centuries-old ore mine was closed on 31 January 1974, converted into a Erzbergbaumuseum with visitor mine.
