In the years about 7 - 4 BC Publius Quinctilius Varus was governor of the important province Syria. In this function he had to intervene 4 BC in Judaea. During 6/7 AD he received the governor post for Gallia with the supreme command on the Rhine. In the late summer of 9 AD he died during the "clades Variana" in the swamps and woods of northwestern Germany.
