byzantiumcoins: "These crescent countermarks ( or better punchmarks ) as well as about 10 other diff. cms. have been published by D.M. Metcalf in his 1969 monograph about the first issue of Anastasius ( 498-512 ) "The origins of the Anastasian currency reform" Chicago 1969.
They have ( supposedly ) been applied on large parts of the circulating folles and half folles of the small module first issues of Anastasius after the second step of the monetary reform (emission of the larger folles in 512 ) to mark the old coins as worth half of the face value."
