During 1909-12 a total of about 30 million pieces was struck of this coin.
Among the coinage of the German Empire this piece is the most unusual concerning all the other coins. This 25 -pfennig piece has not only an unusual face value , even in the material (100 % nickel) and the appearance is a real break of style.
The coin also differed in their sympathies of all other values : No coin in the German Empire was as unpopular as the 25 -pfennig piece. Even before it´s introduction there was great disagreement about the usefulness of this nominal.
The coin is the result of a competition, but the winning design was not executed.

Already during World War I the government started to diminish this type because the metal was needed for weapons. The final demonetization of the 25 -pfennig piece was on October 1 1918 before the end of the German Empire. Despite the unpopularity of this coin are different forgeries known, especially 1909 J , 1911 D and 1911 G.
