The medal was created in conjunction with the celebration of the Emperor’s Golden Jubilee on 18 August 1898 to reward very long-serving military and civilian personnel. Circular gilt bronze medal with laterally-pierced cylinder suspension; the face with a head and shoulders portrait of Emperor Franz Josef I facing right, circumscribed ‘‘FRANC IOS. I. D. G. IMP. AVST. REX BOH. ETC. ET REX AP. HVNG.’(Franz Joseph I, by the grace of God Emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia etc. Apostolic King of Hungary) within an oak leaf border; the reverse inscribed ‘XXXX ANNORVM’ (40 years) on a circular rayed background circumscribed ‘SIGNVM LABORIS FIDELITER PERACTI’ (a token of faithful work completed) within a border decorated with laurel leaves; the gilding rubbed in places and some age-oxidisation spots.
